Our history

Germains was started in Los Angeles in 1871 by Swiss pioneer, Eugene Germain.

The business made its name pelleting sugar beet seed, enabling farmers to implement better drilling techniques and operate more efficiently.

Whilst the original company continues to trade under the Germains name in California today, the seed treatment business was bought by Beresford’s in 1987, allowing them to take advantage of Germains technologies and experience to support the growth and development of its British Sugar business, acquired some 5 years earlier.

Germains  became part of the ABF family when ABF bought both British Sugar and Germains in 1990-91.

Germains Technology Group, was created in 2000, and is spread over 9 locations across 6 countries – United Kingdom, Holland, Spain, China, Poland and the USA.

This latest evolution of the business is a dynamic, growing organisation committed to maintaining and building on our position and reputation as both brand and sector leaders.
