It is fundamental to our aims that we are able to add value to our customer products and ensure that we maximise the quality of the seed grown within the field and the potential quality for the end consumer.
With this in mind, the role of Germains Quality Control team is a fundamental one. Their skills and experience are of paramount importance; unsurprisingly, we ensure that team members are all are expert, and highly qualified, in their specific areas.
In addition, we employ the the ISO management system and ISTA guidelines toprovide clear procedures and measures to establish correct protocol. As a company we use, and continue to invest in, the latest technology, to ensure that we are have the best tools available.
When the seed arrives we carefully test both performance and quality in order to understand its potential. The seed is grown within environmentally controlled germination rooms under different stress conditions. By measuring and comparing changes in the seeds growth we are able to establish the optimum conditions and environment for each seed variety and lot.
We also test the relative humidity of each seed lot, the seed size, the purity of the seed and the quality of the plants after they have grown.
The Quality Team oversees the process at every step, to ensure that each seed lot is handled in the best possible way and that the customer’s specific requirements are met. At various points during the process, samples are taken and tested to ensure conformity, and only once the green light is given can the seed move to the next stage.
Once the process is complete, the product undergoes further testing to measure the level of germination, speed or uniformity, to ensure that the required added value has been met or exceeded. The purity and quality of each root and seedling is examined under microscopes by expert technicians to ensure that only the best quality is reached.
It is also the responsibility of the Quality Control Team to ensure that any pelleted seeds are the correct strength, shape and size. Maintaining a high quality pellet ensures that the grower can drill the seed accurately within the field and that the field maximises its potential yield.
The team is also equipped with an HPLC laboratory that can accurately measure any chemicals or treatments that are added to the pellets. Ensuring a close control over these treatments enables the plant to have the specific concentration of treatment that it requires as it grows. This helps to reduce the need for overhead spraying within the field and supports a more environmentally friendly approach to improving the quality of the plants that are grown.
