Our North America Sugar Beet business unit deals with key players in the sugar beet seed industry across the US.
Germains pioneered its first generation of sugar beet seed priming technology under the brand PAT in the mid 90’s in the US. This brand has enjoyed broad market exposure across the United States.
Germains’ ongoing quest for innovation in yield enhancing physiological treatments has delivered a new standard in sugar beet seed priming: XBEET. A novel technology, XBEET priming for sugar beet was independently tested in the USA from the mid 2000’s.
The North American trial results showed that XBEETdelivered a substantial sugar yield improvement of 4.8% over PAT primed seed, and a massive 12.9% increased yield over unprimed seed. XBEET delivers a positive step change in the speed and uniformity of seedling emergence and final crop establishment.
Recognised by key players in the US beet sugar industry as a valuable tool to secure early crop establishment and increase yield potential, XBEET was identified in 2008 as a strategic initiative by the Agriculture Department of American Crystal Sugar Company, as part of an overall strategy to increase yield, and in 2009/10 Germains primed enough seed to plant 35% of the US requirements.
We now have 6 years of trials at the Northwest Research and Outreach Center, University of Minnesota, Crookston, and XBEET has given 11% yield improvement over non-primed seed. Germains are also in their second year of XBEET trials in Southern Minnesota Sugar and 2010 sees first year trials in the western US growing areas of Idaho & Nebraska/Colorado areas.
